D2 Report - The Anchor - 19th April - Lost 2-3 55/47

From Desi
It was our first League game of the season and WE LOST 3-2 to a better team on the day.

On arrival to The Anchor Inn  we purchased our beverages and  as it was a fine and sunny evening we wandered through to the piste to view their very interesting arena.  I'm not saying that we were piste before we reached the piste but we definitely had a warm glow about us, but it didn't last for long. Looking at it with an untrained eye, the piste appeared level, well raked with no obvious or secretive undulations (unlike our own).  A few practice ends were played and we felt fairly confident of our chances of a good outcome.  Little did we know of the dangers ahead of us.
The Triples began with Mick, Lorne and Alan winning their game in fine style 13-7 whilst Patrick, Jim and I floundered, losing 7-13.  As I previously hinted, the piste was throwing up some unwanted and erratic surprises. We played our boules to the cosh but every now and then, WHOOSH, they would hit the piste and veer off at a 90 degree angle either against the boards or across into the other match where the odd boule of ours appeared to be a winning shot for the other side!  But I digress, we just didn't play well!
As the evening became cooler it was now up to us to put a lot more effort into the Doubles and show the lively opposition what we were made of.  The Captain immediately decided that I was to be dropped (I wondered if this was because I hinted of his non-performance  last week and also his non-appearance for our first game of the season).
Well all I can say is that Bob and Steve played an excellent game against the ladies of The Anchor Inn winning 13-1.  The Mother and daughter side were a joyful pair but couldn't catch up once they were on the board.  Some pretty good shots were played by our boys on the piste, that had  earlier, made me flummoxed!
Patrick and Lorne played extremely well but unfortunately lost in a close game 10-13 and over on the last piste, Mick and Alan fought a very tight game with level scoring most of the way through.  It was exciting to watch as we shivered away being harassed by midges and anything else that the opposition had in their armoury (like good players). But it was to no avail as The Anchor Inn played their winning shot and we lost 12-13.
The Captain permutated his players but has as yet to find that magic combination - it will happen no doubt 'cos none of us are bad players!
Overall we played fairly well but it wasn't our day to win so back into the pub for refreshments.  The Anchor Inn laid on a wonderful selection of warming treats to fill our tummies and to ease our pain.
As it was Patrick's 18th Birthday we had no time for tears.  Patrick did the honours and bought his team mates a round of drinks so we celebrated with  a sparkling 18th, Banana and Walnut cake and cards for the Birthday Boy wishing him happiness and success now and for way into the future.  HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY PATRICK from all of your fellow team mates xxxx
