Well, blow my socks off Dear Friends - we have a Victory!
We won 4-1.
"Happiness, oh happiness,
the greatest gift that we possess,
we praised ourselves on our success
and drank at the bar to great excess!"
So the evening began with The Taverner's phoning Captain Bob up saying, 'help we can't find you'. It must have been the heavy clouds foreseeing doom that blighted their vision, but they eventually arrived receiving a warm welcome from us all.
The Boys as usual made a commotion when I tried to rob them of their weekly Subs before they had even managed to buy themselves their first drink, but I do have to put my foot down. You don't pay, you don't play and that's that; I have to pay for my diamonds and pearls somehow!
Right, on with the evening. The piste was looking sort of OK, dry and a bit dusty which made a change from the usual soggy conditions, we had a few practice runs and then the games began. As quite a few of our Team Players had turned up, Captain Bob decided not to play at all , so he sat keeping an eagle eye on everyone.
Starting with the Triples.Jim, Den and I played on the near piste and we weren't doing very well to start with because I tossed and lost before our boules had even been polished. So, The Taverner's Margaret had first shot and it was a belter, rolling to the coche as if drawn by a magnet. She continued to play some stunning shots and it seemed their points were soaring as we lagged behind 0-5. But then the tables turned and out of nowhere we started getting our act together and putting points on the board. Some (or maybe quite a few) of our ends were a bit iffy or rubbish if you prefer, but we managed to hold our own, 4 points here, 3 points there, etc, etc, etc and we won 13-5. MARVELLOUS!Over on the far piste, Mick, Patrick H and Rodney were preparing to slaughter the opposition and in next to no time they did - winning 13-1. Well done Chaps! Now the Doubles.I was relegated to the Benches not sure if it was because of the earlier money demands or my indiscriminate chucking of the boules. But the Captain has to be obeyed, so I succumbed to his demands but letting him know at the same time he wasn't getting any pudding when we got home that night.
Back to the game.On the near side Den and Jim were having a few confusing moments. Having played with their boules most of their lives, you would think at their age they would know how many boules were needed for the Doubles. After some stern advice from their Captain, they sorted themselves out and lo and behold became a force to be reckoned with. They stormed ahead, gaining point upon point until the opposition just withered away under a cloud of dust. They won 13-4. Three boules in your hands are better than two (so I've heard!).On the far piste, stalwart Patrick and demonic Mick were in the mood for destruction. The boules were flying, gravel was sparking, grains of dust were brought into the fray thereby distracting the enemy in a wave of brilliant showmanship, blazing a magnificent trail to the finish winning 13-4. The poor Taverner's team didn't stand a chance. While that was happening, on the middle piste Steve and Rodney were playing a brave game against quite a formidable side. Margaret was the Tavener's jewel in the crown. This lady and her sidekick Gareth, kept our boys on their toes. They fought back bravely, winning points with fortitude and determination. But alas, it wasn't to be their night and they came away with a losing score of 8-13. Get some rest Steve, you work too hard!It was altogether an enjoyable and friendly evening for the Natives 'B' and The Taverner's at WCC. We laid on some food, we had Man United v Bournemouth on the TV, lots of noise and pennies being spent at the bar. All in all a goodnight's work and many thanks to Val our Chief Bar-person.
Well done everyone.
